Working In IT Sales

By Clare Westwood - The essential job role of an IT sales expert can often be separated into three micro roles; pre sales, sales, and post-sales support to customers.

The pre sales role often involves giving detailed advice about specifications and helping customers match up their needs to their hardware and software choices. Often this means giving demonstrations on products before a sale is made.

The actual sales section of the job involves negotiating agreements which will benefit the customer and supplier.

The post sales role involves fixing and solving any faults that might occur and encouraging the customer to maintain and update their software whenever necessary. You will also need to give training sometimes too.

The typical requirements of a role in this field involve being able to interact with customers and clients whether this is over the phone or on a face to face basis.

Activities you will typically carry out include identifying customer needs and applying your in depth product knowledge in order to find the right products for them.

You will need to ensure that the quality of services are developed enough as you will be identifying and developing business through networking and sales events.

Cold calling will also be a big part of your role; you will be responsible for generating new business leads.

Delivering and planning presentations to customers is essential, therefore you will have to be confident in your product knowledge.

Being aware of all the latest hardware and software releases is essential. Customers will need to have faith in you in order to keep returning.

Time management skills are paramount as you will have to manage your own schedule and make sure your time is put together in a productive way.

Meeting sales targets will be a big part of you role as well as offering support to existing and new customers.

The actual role of an IT sales person can be extremely varied and having a sincere passion for technology is essential.
