By Jessie Mccafferty - In research done to test which methods reduced speed best in work zones, fake radar drones that were intended to set off police radar alarms were tested against other methods like movable rumble strips and radar speed display signs to determine which slowed drivers down more.
Because only drivers with radar detectors could be affected by the drones, they did not compare to the driver feedback signs. In reality the signs not only caused the best speed reductions overall, they slowed down the largest number of drivers.
Even though radar detectors can be a problem for police who are trying to keep traffic speeds safe, seemingly they don't do much for overall traffic speeds.
Some drivers may avoid tickets with radar detectors, but photograph radar catches many of them. This technology takes a photo of the license plate so a speeding citation can be mailed to the driver thru the mail. While this is a controversial and barely guaranteed technique of catching speeders, it does very little to slow traffic down. It may catch some speeders and bring in revenue in the form of tickets, but at the time the car is dangerously speeding, there's no effect.
And some drivers have found ways around even being penalized for speeding. Products in a can like a coating you spray on your plates are available that can be used to make the plates highly reflective. This is meant to cause the camera flash to reflect so brightly that the license number is obscured.
Not only do techniques like radar detectors and photograph radar-fighting strategies mean that less drivers will stop speeding, they make more work for police who have got to attempt to pull over and catch speeders, and then cope with the accidents resulting from unsafe driving. TraffiCalm's signs can be a part of the technology that will work for your region to make the job less complicated for police by slowing traffic and minimizing problems before they start.
