Mole Removal And The Endless Pursuit Of Health And Beauty

By Jane Desouza - The advancements in skin care and maintenance today are very impressive. Scars and pimples are no longer something that people have to put up with. It's the same thing with other skin problems like warts. Moles are not skin problems, per se, but people do find them problematic. That is why mole removal is now practiced largely.

What are moles and why do they exist? The medical name for a mole is nevus, and it is basically a dark spot or pigmented lesion on the skin. They come in all sizes, shapes and color, ranging from skin tone to dark brown or black. Moles could appear throughout one's lifetime, but if they appear at birth, these are referred to as congenital moles.

These, on the other hand, are termed as acquired moles. It is normal for people to have moles, although some have more than others. Physiology has a lot to answer for when it comes to the number of moles one has. Fair-skinned people, in general, tend to have more of them.

Heredity can also be blamed for it. The large number of moles in my cousin can be explained by the similarly large number of moles that her mother, my aunt, has. They are called as atypical or dysplastic moles. There are also instances when these dysplastic moles appear on the skin due to prolonged exposure to the sun.

Moles are not very choosy as to which part of the body they will appear in. They sometimes appear in the most unexpected of places and in varying concentrations. There aren't any moles on my cousin's face. However, most of her moles appear around her neck and upper chest. Now she is contemplating going through some mole removal procedures so she can have a mole-free neck and upper chest.

Why do people remove moles? Moles are, after all, anomalies or irregularities on the skin. If your moles look like that of Cindy Crawford's beauty mark then, by all means, let the moles stay. But not everybody is gifted like Cindy Crawford and other celebrities with beauty marks. As a result, we are saddled with problems of having to live with these ugly and not-at-all-flattering moles. They would have to go.

Moles are not removed purely for the sake of beauty. Skin cancer or melanoma might be the result of some of these moles. Melanoma is by far the most deadly skin disease. Even moles that seem to be harmless in the beginning can gradually turn into cancerous moles as time passes. This becomes a huge source of worrying, particularly for those who have a lot of moles.

Aside from observing the moles, you should also have a doctor diagnose whether your moles are cancerous or not. If they are diagnosed as cancerous, look into the possible mole removal methods that you can undergo. You can choose among lotions, creams, and even surgical operations and excision. The type of mole and the stage of the cancer risk will largely determine the treatment that you will choose.
